Corkscrew Hazel | Corylus avellana 'Contorta'

  • First discovered in a hedge in the 1800s, this perennially-popular hazel is unmatched when it comes to ornamental value. Its contorted branches twist and corkscrew in spirals providing genuine year-round interest.
  • Particularly interesting in winter, when there are no leaves to disguise the interesting form. Also known as "Harry Lauder's Walking Stick", after an old-time, Scottish  comedian and his gnarled walking aid.
  • Growing to no more than four metres high or wide, 'Contorta' is perfect for small gardens and can even be grown in a large container on the patio or terrace.
  • Boasting colour-changing, heart-shaped (cordate) foliage, and long yellow catkins from winter into to spring. It's not just the branches that twist and torsion - the leaves do, too!
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPotsâ„¢. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single-use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post.MORE
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better-shaped tree. This can stop the tree from becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE
