'Enorma' Runner Bean Plants

  • Bigger doesn’t always equal better, but come on… Just look at those pods! ‘Enorma’ is an aptly-named cultivar whose pods can easily reach up to half a metre in length, while still retaining an excellent taste.
  • With a superb flavour and texture, as well as being suitable for freezing, ‘Enorma’ runner beans are as versatile as they come; use your beans in everything from chutneys to curries, from pastas to paellas.
  • Growing up to three metres high, your plant(s) will need supporting. Use a stake, trellis or A-frame approximately two metres high. The plants will grow tendrils that will reach up and start climbing the structure. You can aid this process by gently wrapping the new growth around the support structure to help it to cling on.
  • Preceding the appearance of the bean pods are elegant scarlet blooms, which provide lovely ornamental appeal alongside the plant’s edible strengths.
  • In fact, it’s these flowers that have gotten the runner bean plant (Phaseolus coccineus) designated Plants for Pollinators status from the RHS, providing bees and butterflies with a valuable source of food.
